QR Codes The Next Big Thing - What is it?

What is a QR Code?

A Quick Response Code, or QR Code, is a special type of barcode that holds information that can be decoded at very high speeds. QR Codes can handle several hundred times more data than a regular barcode. QR barcode readers and cell phones can interpret the information, which may include text, URL links, or other data. A QR Code is best described as black modules formed in a square pattern on top of a white background. Developed in Japan in the 1990s, QR Codes were originally used to track parts in vehicle manufacturing. Now they are commonly used in Japan, the Netherlands, and South Korea for a variety of functions including manufacturing, logistics coordinating, advertising, and marketing. In Japan, for example, QR codes are printed on paperback spines, rental video cases, and sushi plates used in revolving sushi bars.

They're the next big thing for Smartphones, but what can a QR Code do for you?

Why are QR Codes used?

QR Codes are increasingly used in convenience-oriented applications for consumers, especially mobile phone users. “Mobile tagging,” as it is commonly referred, is an advertising strategy that is gaining steam in the U.S. Companies or individuals can generate a QR Code to share information with their employees or customers. QR codes can be placed on signs, business cards, buses, magazines, and other physical objects. When a mobile phone user takes a photo of a QR Code on a business card, for example, she will be able to view text, contact information, and open a web site on her smart phone. When an employee scans a QR code on product merchandise, he will be able to retrieve important product information. This process of connecting a physical object with digital information is referred to as “hyperlinking.” Currently, many cell phone models include QR code readers; these include IPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Nokia.
